Made-in-China Sci-fi

Though the storytelling is about how the entire world becomes united to combat overactive sun and save Earth, the director of The Wandering Earth, Frank Gwo, managed to depict the story from a very Chinese perspective. In his conversation with Hollywood Reporter, he emphasized that the determination to propel planet Earth outside of the solar system in search a new home suggests Chinese people's belief in homeland, history, and continuity. It comes from Chinese cultural values and is opposite to the American approach in dealing with the same topic, which is, according to Gwo, “to venture out into space to find a new home.”In addition to its ambition to introduce Chinese narrative to a film genre that is dominated by the West, the film's visual effects were also finished mostly by domestic Chinese companies, with little foreign outsourcing[1].
